What is JobbieNooner? JobbieNooner is a wild island party that is held on Lake St. Clair (near Detroit, Michigan) twice every summer. It was originated by a small group of automotive designers ("Jobbies") including Lee O'Dell who wanted to take co-worker, Lee Wagner, out for his birthday. They decided to blow out of work at lunchtime one Friday (i.e. "Pull a Nooner"), get together on their boats and have a good time. It started 2 decades ago with four boats and seventeen friends. It has grown into the biggest party of the summer with an estimated 1,000+ boats and nearly 5,000 people attending in recent years. It has been nicknamed the "Mardi Gras of the Midwest." When is JobbieNooner held? JobbieNooner#1
is usually held the last Friday before the automotive industry's "July
Shutdown." in June. Where is JobbieNooner held? Over the years JobbieNooner has been held at several different locations including Fisher's Bay, Muscamoot Bay and Gull Island. It's been at Gull Island for the last several years, and will be there again in 2002 (unless something unforseen happens between now and then.) As always, keep posted to JobbieNooner.com for all the latest information! What time should I show up for JobbieNooner? It's really up to you. It has really been getting crowded the last couple of years with over 1,000 boats in attendance, live music, etc. Historically the party has started somewhere around noon and lasted until 6:00-7:00 in the evening, when most people pack up and head to Browns or somewhere else on the water for dinner. Lately people are getting there earlier and earlier. It's usually safe to get there between 10:30-11:30 a.m. and still be able to raft up with some other boats fairly close to shore, although some people go to the extreme of actually sleeping on the island the night before. It's really up to you. Just remember, it's not too easy to get your boat out of there if you get there early and are anchored on the beach. That's something to think about. What should I bring to JobbieNooner? Bring whatever you would normally bring to the biggest blowout beach party that you've ever attended! Sunscreen, cold beverages (CANS ONLY PLEASE - NO GLASS ON THE ISLAND!), food, some cash to buy beads, shirts and Koozies from JobbieNooner.com (mandatory), a camera for capturing the action and posting on JobbieNooner.com, and some garbage bags for putting all your crap in when you're done with it (empty cans, garbage, etc.) Some people also get crazy. There have been Tiki Bars, volley ball nets, footballs, frisbees, etc. Remember, you are on an island in the middle of the lake at the end of June- you can't run to the corner store if you forgot to bring bottled water, film or sunscreen. Pack accordingly. What can I expect to do or see at JobbieNooner? You can expect to be involved in one of the biggest parties on earth! It is what you make of it. This year there will be live entertainment again, so expect to listen to some excellent music. You can also expect to see some lovely ladies giving up "the goods" in exchange for some colorful neckware. If you're a female, you may even get some guys to give it up too. Come on guys - the ladies deserve to see what you're packing in those trunks also. It's only fair. You can check out JobbieNooner.com for pictures of all the action following the event (but be patient please...) That's about it. You are now a JobbieNooner expert.
